Taxi Driver Remanded After Being Charged with Drug Trafficking

A taxi driver, Micheal Pollydore, 41, has been remanded to prison following charges of possessing 41.667 pounds of narcotics with the intent to traffic. Pollydore, a resident of ‘B’ Field Sophia, East Coast Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Sheveen Lalaram at the Weldaad Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

The charge alleges that on December 2, 2025, Pollydore was found with 18.90 kilogrammes of cannabis at Seafield Village, West Coast Berbice. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

During the bail hearing, Pollydore’s attorney, Joel Edmond, explained that his client had received a call from a passenger requesting a trip to Berbice. According to Edmond, the passenger took Pollydore to three different locations, including New Amsterdam, to collect and drop off items.

While in Seafield Village, the passenger allegedly informed Pollydore that police were pursuing them, prompting him to pull over. The passenger exited the vehicle, while Pollydore remained inside. Afterward, Pollydore reportedly went to the Weldaad Police Station to report the incident. The police then returned him to the car, where a search was conducted leading to the discovery of the narcotics in the trunk.

Edmond argued that Pollydore had cooperated with the police, even showing them where the passenger had gone, although the individual managed to evade capture. He stated that Pollydore was willing to comply with any reporting conditions if granted bail.

However, Police Prosecutor Sergeant Garfield Edwards opposed the bail application, asserting that Pollydore was fully aware of the purpose of the trip to Berbice and the nature of the cargo he was transporting to Georgetown. Edwards revealed that police intelligence had tracked both Pollydore and his passenger. He noted that the car was abandoned on a street in Seafield Village, and Pollydore was later intercepted while boarding a Route 50 minibus to Georgetown.

In a further development, police found the car keys in Pollydore’s possession, which led them back to where the vehicle was left, where the drugs were discovered in the trunk.

Emphasizing the seriousness of the charge, Edwards mentioned that the analyst’s certificate for the recovered narcotics was still pending.

After considering the arguments presented, Magistrate Lalaram denied bail and remanded Pollydore to prison. He is scheduled to return to court on December 19 for further proceedings.
