Teenager and Woman Hospitalized Following Gas Explosion in Sophia

News

A teenager and a woman have been hospitalized after a gas explosion occurred at their residence in C Field, Sophia, early Thursday morning, September 4, 2025. Concerns have been raised regarding the gas cylinder involved in the incident, prompting a response from Massy Gas Products.

In a statement, Massy Gas Products Guyana Ltd. confirmed that the explosion was caused by a “faulty, non-recommended regulator.” The company expressed deep concern for the well-being of the injured individuals and extended wishes for their swift recovery.

Upon notification of the explosion, a technical response team from Massy Gas visited the site at approximately 2:20 PM to conduct an assessment. The injured parties were not present during the visit, but the team spoke with Mr. King Jarod, the brother of one of the victims.

Preliminary findings from the assessment revealed several key points:

The LPG cylinder showed no signs of leaks.

The cylinder’s rubber seal was intact.

The cylinder, purchased just two days prior from a nearby dealer, was nearly full.

A defective, non-recommended regulator was installed, which was found to be releasing gas even when in the OFF position, leading directly to the explosion.

Massy Gas noted that the incident had not been reported to the Guyana Fire Service. In response, the team replaced the faulty regulator with a recommended Kosan regulator, ensuring that the new installation met safety standards.

The company emphasized the critical importance of using only approved regulators and fittings that comply with established safety standards. They urged customers to regularly inspect their equipment and report any suspected leaks or unusual odors to their emergency hotline at 592-600-0839.

Massy Gas also highlighted its commitment to safety by investing in community education and awareness programs aimed at promoting the safe and responsible use of LPG.

As investigations continue, the community remains on alert as they await further updates on the condition of the injured individuals and the circumstances surrounding the explosion.
