– Ahead of Elections
News Source Guyana Rerorts : As political parties finalize their candidate lists for the upcoming elections, three prominent members of the Alliance For Change (AFC) are set to join the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU). Opposition Members of Parliament Juretha Fernandes, Sherod Duncan, and Ricky Ramsaroop have reportedly signed on to the APNU’s candidate list, with Fernandes slated to serve as the Prime Ministerial Candidate.

Additionally, former Deputy Commissioner of Police Paul Williams and prominent attorney Dexter Todd will also be featured on the APNU’s candidate list, according to party sources.
In an interview with News Source, APNU Presidential Candidate and PNC Reform Leader Aubrey Norton announced that the party will launch its campaign on July 6. Despite recent departures of several party members, Norton expressed confidence in the inclusion of new faces in the upcoming elections.
“When our list comes out, there will be many quality candidates, and the party will benefit from their inclusion,” Norton stated.
When asked about concerns regarding the exits of high-profile members, Norton noted that many of those departing were not deeply rooted activists within the party. “They were never really engaged in the party’s discipline and development, so I am not surprised by their decisions,” he explained.
Norton, who inherited the candidate list from former President Granger, emphasized that the upcoming elections would feature a refreshed list of candidates who understand party discipline. “You cannot run a political party with everyone wanting to do their own thing,” he said.
The APNU is focusing heavily on attracting the youth vote, with nearly 40% of its candidate list expected to comprise young individuals.
Regarding potential coalition talks with the AFC, Norton confirmed that discussions have not yielded results, prompting the APNU to move forward independently. However, he remains open to further coalition discussions ahead of nomination day.
“We have spent months seeking a coalition, but with the election date approaching, we needed to make firm decisions,” he stated, affirming the inclusion of Juretha Fernandes as part of the APNU’s candidate lineup.
As the political landscape evolves, the APNU is poised to present a robust team aimed at addressing the needs of the electorate in the upcoming elections.
