Time to Treat Our Teachers Better- Ronald J Daniels

  • News

I have always held deep affections for teachers, starting from my nursery school days. Recently, my nursery school teacher, Teacher Faye, reached out to congratulate me on the man I have become. Her encouragement back then meant the world to me, and hearing from her again warmed my heart.

I remember Ms. Berle from Mocha, my Prep B teacher, who instilled a sense of discipline in us that felt almost military. She treated us like her own children. Ms. Monica Samaroo, my Standard One teacher, was another significant influence. I even tracked her down recently after years apart, and I still hear my cousin Joelle accuse me of favoring Ms. Monica’s version of events when it came to discipline.

At Central High, Ms. Robinson commanded respect and silence in the corridors. Though strict, she had a big heart filled with love for us. I often misbehaved just to be sent to Ms. Cherrilene Baxter-Dennis’ office, where I loved spending time.

At the University of Guyana, Dr. Loncke, my French lecturer, invited me to join various organizations she led. Professor Messiah praised my work and always encouraged my potential. Professor Bishop gave me invaluable advice, helping me channel my passion productively.

Teachers have shaped my life from the very beginning. They create a home away from home, often providing warmth and support that some of us may not find in our own households. They play many roles: parents, counselors, friends, and even victims of parental abuse.

Many of us have confided in teachers things we couldn’t tell our parents, received meals when our families couldn’t provide, or stayed with teachers who wanted to ensure our progress. Yet, I am appalled by the little value our governments have placed on teachers over the years.

Teaching is a labor of love, and often a thankless job. Many teachers work in poorly equipped schools with inadequate infrastructure and low salaries. Their work extends beyond the school hours, often involving late nights of lesson preparation with minimal resources.

Teachers set the parameters for our development. Many of us owe our success to their selfless investment in our futures. It is disheartening that some beneficiaries of their hard work sit across from unions and reject calls for better wages and working conditions.

The Aubrey C. Norton government will uplift teachers and ensure they receive the quality of life they deserve.
