To combat reckless road use and enhance safety, Traffic Chief Mahendra Singh announced the upcoming introduction of speed-limiting devices for motor lorries. These vehicles have frequently been associated with violations such as speeding, overloading, and inadequate maintenance.

During a segment of the “Safeguarding the Nation” program, Singh revealed that the Traffic Department is collaborating with the Ministry of Public Works to create weight stations to monitor vehicle loads. “In time to come, speed-limiting devices will be installed on lorries to restrict their speed capabilities,” Singh stated, emphasizing the goal of reducing road incidents.
The department has ramped up enforcement efforts, increasing patrols in areas heavily trafficked by lorries to ensure compliance. Additionally, ongoing discussions with vehicle owners, fleet managers, and contractors aim to encourage voluntary adherence to road safety laws.
Minibuses have also been a concern due to frequent offenses, including speeding and overloading. In response, the Police have tightened the process for issuing certificates of fitness and road service licenses for minibuses. Data shows that in 2024, minibuses were involved in 8 out of 117 fatal accidents, while this year, only one out of 63 fatal accidents involved a minibus, indicating progress in enforcement and compliance.
