Traffic Chief Mahendra Singh announced that the Safe Road Intelligence System has proven to be an effective tool for traffic enforcement, having issued over 15,000 speeding tickets since its launch in April 2025.
At the launch of the Guyana Police Force’s Christmas Policing Plan, Singh highlighted the role of smart cameras and road-monitoring technology in enhancing road safety and law enforcement. With 26 operational camera sites, the system provides real-time data on various traffic violations, including tinted windows and failure to wear seat belts.
Singh noted that the system generates about 200 cases weekly, particularly for parking and obstruction offenses. He warned that motorists neglecting ticket payments would face court action: “If you don’t pay, we will proceed to court.”
Speeding remains a key issue, with 15,000 tickets issued from the system out of 32,768 speeding violations recorded this year. Some drivers have been caught exceeding speeds of 180 km/h.
So far in 2025, a total of 37,601 traffic tickets have been issued nationwide. Singh also mentioned the suspension of 21 driver’s licenses linked to fatal accidents. He emphasized strict enforcement during the busy holiday period and introduced a $100,000 fine for motorists stopping on the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge, with seven drivers already penalized under this regulation.
He urged all motorists to adhere to traffic laws to ensure safety during the Christmas season.
