A Father’s Day outing among friends took a tragic turn on Sunday when 21-year-old Nazim Mohammed, a resident of Berbice, drowned in the Demerara River near Coomacka, on the outskirts of Linden.

Eyewitnesses reported that Mohammed and his friends arrived at the beach in a celebratory mood. However, less than 30 minutes after their arrival, onlookers noticed the group signaling for help. Several individuals rushed to assist, only to learn that Mohammed had encountered difficulties in the water and had disappeared.
An alarm was raised, and police were contacted as the young man’s friends were seen in distress, crying and explaining that Mohammed had drowned. Attempts by an onlooker to rescue him were unsuccessful.
Local residents informed News Source that the area of the river where Mohammed was last seen is known for its strong currents. As of now, his body has not yet been recovered, and an investigation into the incident is underway.
This tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the dangers associated with swimming in fast-moving waters.
