Trailblazer in Blue: Sarah Ann Higgins Makes History as the GPF’s First Female Aeronautical Engineer

News

In a historic milestone for the Guyana Police Force (GPF), Woman Police Constable Sarah Ann Higgins has shattered the glass ceiling to become the organization’s first female aeronautical engineer.

At just 21 years old, Ms. Higgins is a proud graduate of the esteemed Art Williams and Harry Wendt Aeronautical Engineering School. Coming from humble beginnings in North Sophia, she attributes her success to the values instilled by her parents, George and Lloyoceanna Higgins. As the fourth of five children, she credits her family’s moral grounding and unwavering support as the foundation of her accomplishments.

Higgins’ academic journey began at Redeemer Primary School and continued at Richard Ishmael Secondary School. Long before she learned to maintain aircraft, she gained practical life skills by selling plantain chips and icicles in her community, fostering a sense of independence. Prior to enlisting in the GPF, she balanced multiple jobs, providing her with the real-world grit necessary for a career in a demanding technical field.

Breaking Barriers and Building the Future

The road to becoming an aeronautical engineer was filled with challenges. However, driven by her faith and a commitment to self-improvement, Higgins defied the odds. Her graduation signifies more than just an academic achievement; it marks a transformative shift in what young women can achieve within the disciplined services.

Currently stationed at the Strategic Planning and Implementation Unit, Higgins will utilize her technical expertise to support the GPF’s broader goals of innovation and modernization.

On behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Clifton Hicken, the Executive Leadership Team, and the men and women of the Guyana Police Force, we extend our heartiest congratulations to Woman Police Constable Sarah Ann Higgins. We celebrate her historic achievement and her dedication to the service of our country.
