Journalist Travis Chase has filed a defamation lawsuit against social media commentator Mikhil Rodrigues, aka “Guyanese Critic,” seeking over $5 million in damages. The suit stems from statements made during Rodrigues’ Facebook talk show on August 14, which Chase claims harmed his reputation.
In court documents, Chase alleges that Rodrigues falsely accused him of taking orders from the Mohamed family and linked him to the Venezuelan Government—claims he denies. He argues that these statements suggest he is politically biased and dishonest, damaging his credibility.
Chase’s attorney described Rodrigues’ comments as malicious falsehoods, asserting they were made without evidence or a chance for Chase to respond. The lawsuit also seeks a permanent injunction to prevent further publication of these statements.
As the case progresses, it underscores the tensions between traditional journalists and social media commentators in Guyana.
