Trial of March 2020 Election Controversy Adjourned Due to Defense Attorney’s Absence

News

The trial concerning the March 2020 General and Regional Elections encountered delays on Tuesday when it could not proceed due to the unavailability of defense attorney Eusi Anderson, who is currently out of the jurisdiction.

The matter was addressed at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before presiding Magistrate Faith McGusty, who noted that efforts to contact Anderson, representing defendant Sherfane February, had been unsuccessful.

The trial had resumed on February 16 after a break of over two months and is currently engaged in a voir dire—a trial within a trial—related to February. This marks the fourth voir dire in the ongoing proceedings.

Magistrate McGusty informed the court that witnesses present were ready to testify specifically regarding the ongoing voir dire. However, due to Anderson’s absence and the inability to proceed with his evidence-in-chief, the court was unable to move forward.

The trial has been adjourned to Wednesday, February 25, for continuation, adhering to structured case management guidelines. To minimize further delays, Magistrate McGusty proposed hearing dates for the weeks of March 16 and March 23, as well as the weeks commencing April 20 and April 27, 2026.

Nine individuals are currently charged with conspiring to manipulate the election results in favor of APNU+AFC in an effort to deny victory to the PPP. Those charged include former government minister Volda Lawrence, former Chief Elections Officer Keith Lowenfield, former Region Four Returning Officer Clairmont Mingo, and former Deputy Chief Elections Officer Roxanne Myers, among others.

The controversy surrounding the March 2020 elections led to delays in the official results for five months until PPP candidate Irfaan Ali was sworn in as President on August 2, 2020.
