In a Statement Gpl Shared : At approximately 11:24 AM, the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) experienced a trip on the L5 Transmission Line linking the Sophia and Kingston Substations. This incident resulted in a temporary disruption of several power services.

The situation arose when an excavator engaged in construction activities along the Canal between Middle and Sheriff Streets came into contact with the L17 line, which connects the Good Hope to the Countrywide Distribution System. This contact caused a noticeable sagging of the L5 Transmission Line, leading to a complete shutdown of the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System.

At the time of the incident, customers in the area were left without power, leading to widespread inconvenience. Investigations revealed that the excavation work was occurring near crucial infrastructure, emphasizing the need for heightened awareness and caution during such operations.

Restoration efforts were initiated immediately, and power was restored to all affected areas by approximately 1:00 PM.

GPL expresses its sincere apologies for the disruption and inconvenience caused to its customers and emphasizes the importance of safety measures during construction activities to prevent similar incidents in the future.
