Reaaz Bacchus, a 41-year-old truck driver from New Amsterdam, Berbice, was acquitted of a narcotics trafficking charge on Thursday after the Diamond Magistrate’s Court found insufficient evidence for a conviction.

The case was presided over by Magistrate Dylon Bess, who heard submissions from both sides. Bacchus, represented by attorney Bernard Da Silva, had initially submitted a no-case argument, which the court rejected, prompting Bacchus to present his defense.
Following further deliberations, Magistrate Bess concluded that the evidence presented did not substantiate the allegations against Bacchus, leading to his not guilty verdict and subsequent discharge.
Bacchus had been charged on July 9, 2024, with trafficking 9.25 kilograms of marijuana, which was allegedly concealed in two bulky shopping bags inside a toolbox under the truck he was operating. He denied the charges and was granted bail set at $2.7 million.
The charges stemmed from Bacchus’s arrest on July 5, when police intercepted his truck along the Bagotstown Public Road, East Bank Demerara. During a search of the vehicle, the suspected marijuana was discovered. Bacchus reportedly told officers that a “Rastaman” had given him the bags to deliver “over the west side.”
With the court’s ruling, Bacchus has been cleared of all charges, marking a significant turn in the case
