Dead are 21-year-old Mickel Daniels and his 23-year-old brother, Miguel Daniels, both of Lot 61 First Street, Prospect, East Bank Demerara.

The fatal accident occurred at approximately 05:30 hours and involved motorcar PAC 9853, owned by Adeon Pritchard of Prospect and driven by Thomas Henry, 23, of Moruca, Essequibo River. Reports indicate the car was travelling east along the northern side of the road when it slammed head-on into minibus BWW 4493, driven by a 39-year-old man of Harlem, West Coast Demerara. Several passengers were on board the minibus at the time of the collision.

The brothers were rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where they were both pronounced dead. Other injured persons were admitted for treatment. Police have since launched an investigation into the accident.

The tragedy has left the family shattered. A grieving relative, Andres Atkinson, said he is struggling to process the loss of two young men he believed had their entire futures ahead of them.

“I’m sad, I’m angry… these are two young men who were meant to go a long way,” Atkinson said.

He expressed deep frustration at what he described as the continued failure to address reckless and dangerous driving on Guyana’s roads a problem he said is disproportionately claiming the lives of young people.

“These are things that could be drastically reduced if people made it a priority… yet we continue to lose mostly young people,” he said, as he braced himself to console the brothers’ mother.
