Two gold miners, Rovel Santiago, 21, from Mabaruma in Region #1, and Shawn Williams, 20, from Kuru Kururu village along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway, were arrested on Saturday, June 28, 2025, and charged with murder today, July 1, 2025.
The charges were laid under the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01, at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court before His Worship Teriq Mohammed. Both defendants were read the murder charge but were not required to plead. They were remanded to prison and will appear again on August 14, 2025, for the continuation of the case.
Santiago and Williams are accused of murdering Riley Abrams on June 28, 2025, at Balamani Backdam, Cuyuni River, Region #7.
A post-mortem examination conducted on June 30, 2025, by Government Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh determined the cause of death to be “multiple incise wounds.”
The investigation is ongoing as authorities continue to gather evidence in this tragic case.
