Jonel Fernandes and Trivette Harry, both residents of Mabaruma, have been fined for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The two men were arrested and charged with operating motor vehicles while their breath alcohol levels exceeded legal limits. They appeared today, January 7, 2026, at the Mabaruma Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Clive Nurse, where the charges were formally presented.
In a brief hearing, both Fernandes and Harry pleaded guilty to the charges. They were each fined $200,000, with the alternative of serving five months in prison if the fines are not paid.
This case highlights ongoing efforts by local authorities to curb drunk driving and promote road safety in the community.
