UPDATE: Berbice Man Killed After Being Run Over by Truck While Lying on Fyrish Road Identified as Mark Songster

Police have released further details surrounding the death of a 53-year-old Berbice man who was killed on Friday night after being run over by a truck while lying on the public road.

Dead is Mark Songster of Lot 6 Section ‘C’ Fyrish Road, Corentyne, Berbice. The fatal incident occurred at approximately 20:10 hours on the Fyrish Public Road.

According to police, motor lorry GYY 5720 was proceeding westward along the southern drive lane of the road at a normal rate of speed when it ran over Songster, who was lying on the southern driving lane. He sustained severe injuries to his body as a result.

Public-spirited citizens picked up the unconscious man and rushed him to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was examined by the doctor on duty, who pronounced him dead on arrival. His body was subsequently taken to the Ramoo Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.

The driver, a 43-year-old resident of Black Bush Polder, Corentyne, Berbice, was taken into custody and is assisting with the investigation. A breathalyser test administered to the driver returned two readings showing 11 micrograms of alcohol per breath. The truck has since been lodged at the Albion Police Station, where it is expected to be examined by a Licensing and Certifying Officer.

Investigations are continuing.
