The body of 33-year-old Mortimer Sooknanan, a labourer from Queenstown, was discovered on Sunday at Lake Capoey, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam).

It is believed that Sooknanan drowned sometime between Saturday, August 2, and Sunday, August 3. Investigations indicate that he had visited the lake with his younger brother, Naitram Sooknanan, 30, and two friends, known only as “Buddy” and “Royen,” around 11:00 AM on Saturday. The group was reportedly consuming alcohol during their outing.
According to Naitram, around 1:30 PM, he saw Mortimer swimming with the two friends. After Mortimer came out of the water and sat on a bench near the boat landing, he later became unaccounted for by approximately 2:00 PM. A search ensued but yielded no results.
The following morning, at around 8:00 AM, Naitram and family members resumed their search at Lake Capoey. Sadly, Sooknanan’s body was found submerged in the water.
Upon recovery, the body showed signs of what appeared to be fish bites on the neck, back, and left ear. The body was taken to the Suddie Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A postmortem examination is scheduled to follow.
