US Ambassador Addresses Bond Requirement for Visa Applicants

News

News Source Guyana Reports : US Ambassador Nicole Theriot announced today that Guyanese citizens will not be required to pay a bond of up to US$15,000 to enter the United States under a proposed pilot non-immigrant program.

The US Administration is considering a program that would mandate business and tourist visa applicants from certain countries—primarily those with high visa overstay rates and weak internal document security—to pay a bond ranging from US$5,000 to US$15,000 based on their profile. However, Ambassador Theriot confirmed that Guyana is not among the countries affected by this proposal.

“Currently, Guyana is not included on that list. It does not apply to Guyanese citizens applying for a visa,” she stated in response to a query from reporters.

Ambassador Theriot noted that Guyana’s visa overstay rate is not problematic. In 2023, the overstay rate for Guyanese citizens was reported at 5.59%, with a total of 3,186 individuals with B1/B2 visas overstaying their authorized time in the United States.

“I haven’t checked recently, but Guyana’s overstay rate is not very high. In my opinion, it is not problematic,” she added, expressing confidence that the situation is unlikely to change.

The US Government has been implementing various initiatives to combat illegal immigration, but for now, Guyanese citizens can apply for visas without the additional bond requirement.
