Venezuelan National Charged with Drug Trafficking in Mahaica Remanded

Jaiver Vasquez, an 18-year-old construction worker from Helena #2 Mahaica and Barrancas Del Orinoco, Venezuela, was arrested on July 16, 2025, by officers from the Mahaica Police Station. He faces charges of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking, specifically involving 14 grams of cocaine.

The charge against Vasquez was formally laid under Section 5(1)(a)(i) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act, Chapter 10:10.

On July 18, 2025, Vasquez appeared before His Worship Allan Wilson at the Mahaicony Magistrate’s Court. During the proceedings, the charge was read to him, to which he pleaded not guilty. Following his plea, he was remanded to prison, with his next court date scheduled for August 29, 2025.

Vasquez was apprehended by police officers on motorcycle patrol duty at Helena #2, where he was observed standing on a bridge with a black one-strap bag around his neck. A subsequent search of his person and bag revealed 11 grams of suspected cocaine.

The investigation continues as authorities address the growing concern of drug trafficking in the region.
