Venezuelan Worker Shot by Licensed Firearm Holder at Parika

A 20-year-old Venezuelan construction worker of Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo, was shot and injured late Saturday night after being found on the property of a 62-year-old licensed firearm holder at Parika.

The incident occurred at approximately 23:30hrs. According to a police statement, the farmer was at home when he heard a sound at his front door and subsequently observed the young man sheltering under a shed on his property.

“The farmer, who is a licensed firearm holder, later observed the 20-year-old male under a shed on his property. During the incident, two rounds were discharged from the firearm, which resulted in the 20-year-old receiving injuries to his upper right abdomen area,” police said.

The injured man was transported to the De Kinderen Regional Hospital, where he was admitted. The farmer subsequently reported the matter to police.

The licensed firearm, five live rounds, and two spent shells were lodged as evidence pending investigation. Several persons have been questioned and statements are being taken.

Police in Regional Division #3 are investigating the incident.
