The Honourable Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand, held a crucial meeting today with Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) along the East Coast of Demerara, focusing on enhancing local governance and community development.

The session brought together Chairpersons, Vice Chairpersons, Overseers, Councillors, and other key personnel from various NDCs to discuss pressing community issues. Minister Manickchand emphasized the importance of stronger administrative systems, enhanced accountability, and responsive service delivery, underscoring that the performance of local democratic organs directly impacts residents’ daily lives.
A significant highlight of the meeting was the impromptu visit from Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, who joined the discussions and engaged directly with NDC officials and residents. His unexpected arrival energized the room, showcasing the Government’s commitment to strengthening local governance across the nation.
Discussions centered around improving infrastructure and community facilities, enhancing drainage and irrigation systems to mitigate flooding, and ensuring efficient and environmentally responsible waste management practices. There was also a focus on improving financial management and budget planning within the NDCs, particularly in areas like revenue collection, record-keeping, and transparent spending.
The Vice President, who is also the General Secretary of the PPP, reaffirmed his and the party’s commitment to fulfilling election promises outlined in their manifesto. Minister Manickchand reiterated the need for closer collaboration with residents to ensure their concerns are addressed swiftly and that development initiatives are aligned with local needs.
She asserted the Government’s commitment to empowering local democratic organs and providing the necessary support for their effective functioning. Strong, people-centered local governance is vital for national growth, and the Ministry will continue working closely with NDCs to enhance service delivery and accelerate development.
