Vice President Jagdeo Critiques Local Contractors for Project Delays

  • News

News Source Guyana Reports : Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo has voiced his dissatisfaction with the performance of several local contractors, highlighting ongoing issues with timely delivery of government projects. During recent discussions, he acknowledged that while the government is implementing necessary systems to improve procurement, many contractors continue to underperform.

“We are still having major problems with delivery… People are slow in completing a lot of the projects that we have awarded, especially in housing and infrastructure,” Jagdeo stated. He noted particular frustration from young professionals who have reported delays of up to a year in the completion of their homes, despite already paying mortgages.

The government has been actively rolling out various projects across the country and has emphasized the increasing number of contractors involved in government work. However, concerns have emerged regarding the quality of workmanship, with numerous complaints about substandard road construction in several areas.

Both Jagdeo and Works Minister Juan Edghill have acknowledged these issues and have previously threatened to blacklist underperforming contractors. Yet, there appears to have been little action taken in that regard.

Jagdeo remarked, “We have a problem with many local contractors… Some are doing excellent jobs, but others are not fulfilling their promises or are delivering substandard work. We have to fix that part of the procurement process to ensure quality.”

He emphasized the importance of balancing opportunities for local contractors with the need for quality work, stating that the procurement system requires strengthening to address these challenges effectively.
