Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo announced on Thursday that public servants will receive their promised 8% pay increase prior to the General and Regional Elections set for September 1, 2025. At his weekly press conference, Jagdeo emphasized, “It doesn’t make sense to pay the public servants after” the elections.

In December 2024, the government signed a landmark two-year agreement with the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU), which includes a retroactive 10% salary increase effective January 1, 2024, followed by the 8% increase in 2025.
The agreement also stipulates that public servants in Grades 1 to 6 with a minimum of four years of service will be moved to the midpoint of their current salary scale, resulting in increases of up to 13% for some employees. Those with at least eight years of service in Grades 1 to 6 will be promoted to the maximum of their scale, leading to potential salary increases of up to 26%.
Additionally, public servants in Grades 7 to 8 with four years of service in their current scale will be eligible for an additional monthly allowance equivalent to the nominal difference between the minimum and midpoint of Grade 6, which may provide increases of up to 11%.
Jagdeo also mentioned the introduction of qualification allowances to incentivize education and professional development, effective January 1, 2025, along with other specific allowances.
These measures aim to enhance the welfare of public servants and recognize their contributions to the country.
