Vice President and General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, launched a scathing attack on aspiring presidential candidate Azzurdin Mohamed, accusing him of dishonesty, contradictions, and a lack of credibility.

This statement follows criticisms from the Mohamed family regarding the government’s Because We Care cash grant program. In a Facebook post, the Mohameds argued that the cash grant is not a gift but a right to public resources.
Dr. Jagdeo countered this argument, asserting that the program is a direct fulfillment of the government’s manifesto promise. He criticized critics for labeling it as “campaigning” while ignoring the billions lost due to the Mohameds’ actions.
“They didn’t know that the $11B stolen from the treasury is taxpayers’ money too? That $11B could fund one year of cash grants for all 200,000 kids in the country. But that is the audacity – the shamelessness – to make a post like that,” he stated.
The Vice President also highlighted a double standard in the demands for accountability, noting that civil society groups and some sections of the media are calling for explanations from President Irfaan Ali over two minor social media posts while remaining silent on larger issues.
“TIGI wants explanations from President Ali about two little Facebook posts, but they don’t want explanations about the 10,000 kilograms of gold smuggled out of the country by the Mohameds,” he remarked.
Additionally, Mohamed claimed to have proof implicating President Ali in alleged tax evasion. However, Dr. Jagdeo dismissed this evidence as “dismissive” and unconvincing.
He further pointed out Mohamed’s contradictions, such as claiming he paid US$1 million for a Lamborghini, only to later present an invoice for just US$5,000.
“This is someone who lies openly. He contradicts himself every time he speaks, even when presenting his so-called evidence,” Dr. Jagdeo said.
As General Secretary, Dr. Jagdeo reiterated that the PPP/C is not targeting Mohamed because of his growing popularity. “We go after anyone who comes after us—APNU, AFC, Mohamed, anyone. We are equal-opportunity in that regard,” he asserted.
He concluded by reaffirming the PPP/C’s commitment to delivering on its promises, stating that no amount of distraction from Mohamed or others would deter the government from fulfilling its mandate.
