with Focus on Potable Water Access
The Amerindian settlement of Wailang, located approximately 60 km from Mahdia, is poised for significant development, particularly in securing access to potable water for its over 50 residents. This commitment was made during a visit today by Minister Susan Rodrigues, who led a team to engage with community members and assess their needs.

Accompanying Minister Rodrigues were a delegation that included Toshao of Campbelltown Earl Gildharie, Senior Councillor of Princeville Lormel Williams, Deputy Mayor of Mahdia Akita John, and Khemraj Persaud, Senior Engineer at Guyana Water Inc. The visit was warmly received by the community, which established its own Community Development Council just four years ago and has seen substantial growth, now being represented at the National Toshaos Council (NTC).
During the meeting, Minister Rodrigues assured residents that planning for a comprehensive water supply system will commence in the coming weeks. This critical first step will involve resistivity logging to identify the most suitable area for a well. The plan includes the construction of a well and a robust distribution system designed to connect every household in Wailang, as well as the upcoming primary school and existing health facility, to a reliable potable water supply.
In addition to water access, Wailang is also set to benefit from the construction of a primary school and the provision of a village tractor, essential resources for education and agricultural development within the community.
Community leaders, including Councillor Mr. Baxton Edmund, emphasized the community’s recent growth and welcomed the government’s direct engagement. Villagers also took the opportunity to request government intervention on several pressing issues, including upgrading a recreational facility, improving internet connectivity, and assisting with repairs to previously received solar panels.
Minister Rodrigues acknowledged all concerns raised and committed to following up with the relevant authorities to ensure each matter is addressed. Emphasizing the government’s inclusive approach, she stated, “Every citizen matters, irrespective of race or religion. We work for all of our people. That’s why we come to meet with you and listen to you so that we can develop programs that will improve your lives.”
The proactive steps being taken to provide potable water, along with other planned infrastructural and social developments, underscore a promising future for the community of Wailang.
