We, the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, strongly condemn the conduct and remarks made by the Speaker of the National Assembly during his address to the nation on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. His disparaging, abusive, defamatory, false, and malicious statements directed at the presumptive Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Azruddin Mohamed, are unacceptable. Additionally, his open contempt for the international diplomatic community, particularly the United States and Canada, is deeply troubling.

For almost three months, the Guyanese people were left waiting for the election of a Leader of the Opposition, following a prolonged period during which Parliament was effectively paralyzed by inaction and political maneuvering. These delays were not mere accidents; they were calculated, unjustified actions that represent a clear abuse of constitutional responsibility.
It was only after sustained pressure from international partners, civil society, and the public that the Speaker was compelled to take action. To subsequently ridicule and disparage those diplomats advocating for adherence to Guyana’s Constitution is both reckless and disgraceful.
Equally unacceptable was the Speaker’s choice to use a national address as a platform to personally attack, vilify, and prejudge an elected Member of Parliament. Such remarks are false, defamatory, and politically motivated, revealing a bias incompatible with the neutrality expected from the Office of the Speaker.
The Speaker is not a prosecutor, a political adversary, or a spokesperson for the ruling party. His primary duty is to uphold the Constitution, protect the integrity of Parliament, and act impartially. By opting for insults over restraint and propaganda over principle, he has demeaned the National Assembly and further eroded public confidence in its leadership.
Democracy in Guyana should not require diplomatic pressure to function. The necessity for such pressure in this instance reflects poorly on the Speaker’s conduct, not on those advocating for constitutional integrity.
Monday, January 26, 2026, will mark a historic day for Guyana. After months of delay and deliberate obstruction, the democratic process will finally advance. WIN is eager to turn the page, restore constitutional order, and foster a Parliament that prioritizes the interests of all Guyanese.
