WIN Calls for Urgent Action to Protect the Voting Rights of Offshore Workers

  • News

The We Invest in Nation Hood (WIN) Party has raised alarms regarding the voting rights of nearly 1,000 Guyanese workers employed offshore, who have been informed by their employers that no arrangements will be made for them to leave the FPSOs (Floating Production Storage and Offloading units) or rigs to participate in the upcoming elections.

This situation affects hardworking men and women serving on four FPSOs and five rigs, putting their ability to vote at risk and potentially shutting them out of the electoral process that shapes their country’s future.

WIN has characterized this as both an unfortunate oversight and a significant shortfall in the Guyana Elections Commission’s (GECOM) election preparations. The party asserts that when the law is silent, it is the responsibility of leadership to adapt systems to ensure that all citizens can exercise their rights. “No eligible Guyanese should ever be denied their constitutional right to choose their leaders,” a spokesperson for WIN stated.

To address this issue, WIN is calling for the immediate implementation of the Hopscotch voting method as a practical, fair, and inclusive solution to guarantee offshore workers their right to vote. “Democracy is only real when every voice counts, and no citizen is left behind,” the spokesperson emphasized.

As other political parties focus on their own agendas, WIN remains committed to standing with every Guyanese citizen, whether onshore or offshore, urban or rural. The party believes that every vote is sacred, every voice matters, and every citizen deserves the opportunity to participate in shaping the nation’s future.

WIN urges GECOM and relevant authorities to take swift action to ensure that all eligible voters, regardless of their location, can exercise their democratic rights in the upcoming elections.
