WIN Raise Concerns Over Election Integrity in Guyana

  • News

As elections approach in just over a month, the government is facing accusations of intensifying the abuse of state power in what the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party describes as a coordinated effort to rig the upcoming elections and suppress the democratic will of the people.

On July 24, 2025, several WIN executives and candidates met with the Commonwealth Pre-Election Assessment Mission (PEAM) to express serious concerns regarding the integrity of the electoral process and the urgent need for international oversight.

WIN outlined a pattern of deliberate and systemic breaches of free and fair election principles by the incumbent government, including:

Manipulation of Law Enforcement: Police have been accused of selectively enforcing laws to disrupt WIN’s outreach activities while ignoring events aligned with the ruling party, creating an atmosphere of fear and double standards.

Political Interference in GECOM: There is growing public distrust in the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) and related institutions, exacerbated by past irregularities and recent administrative inconsistencies.

Biased Use of State Media and Resources: Government-controlled media platforms are reportedly being used to promote the ruling party while denying equal access to opposition parties, violating fair campaign principles.

Abuse of Public Funds and Contracts: State resources are allegedly being exploited to secure political loyalty through contract distributions, job offers, and inducements in targeted communities.

Intimidation and Surveillance: Known WIN supporters and candidates are reportedly facing harassment, monitoring, and threats as part of a broader strategy to silence dissent and discourage political participation.

WIN has urged the Commonwealth to take these breaches seriously and to consider strong recommendations, including the necessity for independent oversight, safeguards against state interference, and protocols to prevent election-day manipulation or post-election tampering.

Despite the challenges, WIN expressed gratitude to the Commonwealth for its involvement and reaffirmed its commitment to upholding democracy, transparency, and the right of every Guyanese citizen to vote freely and fairly.
