WIN (We Invest in Nationhood) Member Criticizes Local Government Minister Over Allegations of Negligence and Bullying

In a scathing social media post, Hana Khamelia, a member of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) organization, directed strong criticism at Priya Manickchand, the former Education Minister who is now the Minister of Local Government and Regional Development. Khamelia accused Manickchand of negligence and complicity in perpetuating incompetence within the government. Her remarks come amid ongoing concerns about the state of education in the country and allegations against fellow Minister Sarah Browne.

Khamelia challenged Manickchand, stating, “Do not feign innocence or moral high ground. You are not a victim, nor are you any champion of decency or respect.” She highlighted Manickchand’s past actions, notably an incident involving a public confrontation with the U.S. Ambassador, which remains fresh in public memory.

The WIN member detailed significant issues facing the education sector, alleging that several schools across the nation are in a state of neglect. She cited concerns over the National School Feeding Program, inadequate transport for students, and the lack of basic facilities, describing conditions where children must fetch water in buckets and endure overcrowded classrooms.

Khamelia emphasized that educators are undervalued and demoralized, forced to work under hazardous conditions without adequate support. She criticized Manickchand’s “ostentatious project” following her appointment, alleging it failed to address the ongoing issues in schools, especially noting the situation at Bamia Primary School in Linden.

Further, Khamelia questioned Manickchand’s handling of corruption allegations against her colleagues and challenged her approach to the needs of Indigenous communities across the country. “Have you confronted the corruption allegations against your fellow Minister? Or are you constrained because you have your own to worry about?” she asked.

Khamelia concluded her message with a commitment from WIN to continue holding the government accountable for its actions. Her remarks highlight the broader frustrations within the opposition regarding the administration’s perceived ineffectiveness and accountability to the public.
