Kaieteur News Reports : A 64-year-old woman, Ava Brathwaite, is fighting for her life at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) after being hit by a vehicle with diplomatic plates on Tuesday evening along the Ogle Main Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

Ava, an employee at Cara Lodge Hotel and a resident of Eastville Housing Scheme, is listed in critical condition with severe injuries, including a punctured lung and brain swelling. She is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and requires assistance to breathe.
According to her sister, Allison Brathwaite, Ava was driving home from work around 11:00 PM when she was allegedly struck from behind by a speeding diplomatic vehicle. Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicle had multiple occupants who appeared to be consuming alcohol. The impact caused Ava’s vehicle to veer off the road and collide with a concrete utility pole.
Allison recounted, “They were driving with speed and hit my sister’s car… It was a very big impact. The whole car was write-off.” The family was first informed of the accident by staff at the Cara Lodge Hotel, who recognized Ava’s work shirt.
Upon arriving at the hospital, the family encountered police officers who attempted to question Ava, but her critical condition prevented her from responding. The family spent the night with her, trying to gather information about the incident.
The following morning, they visited the Sparendaam Police Station seeking details but reported a lack of cooperation from the police. They expressed frustration over not receiving any information about the occupants of the diplomatic vehicle involved in the crash. “The police were giving them a hard time… they didn’t give us any number, no name, nothing,” Allison stated.
The family is demanding full disclosure from the police regarding the individuals in the diplomatic vehicle, questioning the apparent lack of action despite police presence at the scene. “We have to get full information… They are dragging their feet,” Allison said.
Ava remains in critical condition, with only slight eye movement in response to voices. The Brathwaite family is pleading for justice, calling for accountability for those involved in the incident. When contacted, Assistant Commissioner of Police Kahli Pareshram denied that any such accident had occurred.
