A 39-year-old woman, Caslene Toney, was tragically killed on Sunday morning after being stabbed by her reputed husband, Morris Hugh, who subsequently attempted suicide and is now hospitalized.
Reports indicate that Toney was attacked at their home, where she and Hugh shared six children, the youngest being just three years old. Their long-term common-law relationship has been described as abusive.
According to Catherine Alfred, Vice Chairperson of the Tigerbone – Banakari community, concerns over the relationship had arisen earlier in January. On January 12, Toney was taken to the police base on the highway to file a report concerning the abuse. However, she ultimately decided not to proceed with the matter.
“Her sister came to tell me what was happening. I even took her to the highway base, where she admitted that this man beat me up with a cutlass and there were marks on her body, but she said she didn’t want the matter to proceed,” Alfred recounted.
Following the fatal incident, Hugh also inflicted stab wounds on himself. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Toney’s death is ongoing.
