Young Man Fined $370,000 for Multiple Traffic Offences in Essequibo

A 20-year-old man from the Charity Housing Scheme has been fined a total of $370,000 after pleading guilty to several traffic-related offences at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court. The individual, identified as Ovid Williams, appeared before Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir regarding incidents that occurred on January 21 along Charity Back Street.

Williams faced charges for:

Driving Without a Licence (contrary to Section 23(1) of the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02).

Breach of Insurance (contrary to Section 3(1) of the Motor Vehicle Insurance (Third Party Risks) Act, Chapter 51:03).

Two Counts of Having Obscured Identification Marks (one for the front and one for the rear), contrary to Section 13 of the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02.

Upon hearing the charges, Williams pleaded guilty to all four offences.

The fines were imposed as follows:

$150,000 for the offence of obscured identification mark (front), with a default sentence of three months’ imprisonment if not paid.

$150,000 for the offence of obscured identification mark (rear), also with a default sentence of three months’ imprisonment.

$30,000 for driving without a licence, with a similar three-month imprisonment default sentence.

$40,000 for breach of insurance, carrying the same punishment for non-payment.

The total fines amounted to $370,000, reinforcing the legal consequences for violations of traffic regulations.
