Taxi Driver Convicted for Driving Under the Influence

Marcus Junior Berin, a 30-year-old taxi driver from Lot 82 Three Friends, was charged with driving while his breath alcohol level exceeded the legally prescribed limit. The offence occurred on Sunday, March 8, 2026, on Mainstay Public Road.

The charge was filed under Section 39A (1) of the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02, which has been amended by the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic (Amendment) Act 17 of 2022.

During a hearing at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, His Worship, Magistrate Mr. Ravindra Mohabir, presided over the case. Berin was read the charge and subsequently pleaded guilty.

In a decisive ruling, Magistrate Mohabir imposed a hefty fine of $200,000. In the event of non-payment, Berin faces a six-month prison sentence. This case highlights ongoing efforts to enforce road safety regulations and combat driving under the influence.
