Dr. Ashni Singh Assures No One Will Be Denied $100,000 Cash Grant Over Lack of Bank Account

News

Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh has dismissed concerns that Guyanese without bank accounts will be unable to access the $100,000 cash grant, saying that no one will be denied the disbursement for that reason.

On Thursday, Singh said the government will make arrangements for persons who do not have bank accounts.

“Nobody will be denied their cash grant on account that they don’t have a bank account… (If you don’t have an account), we will work out an arrangement and devise a mechanism for you to get your cash grant,” he stated.

How payments are being made

Singh explained that using bank transfers helps the process move more efficiently, but he noted that other systems will be put in place for distribution to those who cannot use bank accounts.

He said the government began distributing the $100,000 cash to Guyanese adults last week, with nearly 49,000 public sector workers receiving their grants through their bank accounts. An online self-registration portal for other citizens was launched on Thursday.

Registration portal update

In an interview Thursday evening, Singh said approximately 4,100 persons initiated registration, and more than 2,300 successfully registered within about two hours.

He acknowledged that the portal subsequently slowed down and encountered some difficulties, but said this is expected given the high level of interest. Singh assured citizens that if they could not register on Thursday, the portal would remain open and they could sign up at their convenience.

He also urged persons who experience issues to contact the relevant authorities for assistance.

For the national $100,000 cash grant paid into bank accounts, the government listed the following requirements:

  • Must have a valid National Identification Card, Digital Identity Card, or Guyana Passport
  • Registrant must have a bank account in their name at a local commercial bank
  • Must be physically present in Guyana to register

Help desk support

The government said a national help desk is available to assist persons and can be reached at 501-5085 and 503-2977 during working hours.
