Two Men Detained Following Cannabis Discovery in Bartica

Two men are currently in police custody after authorities discovered suspected cannabis during a routine mobile patrol operation in Bartica on Thursday afternoon, June 11, 2026.

According to the Guyana Police Force, the incident occurred between 2:40 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. at Seventh Avenue, where ranks encountered the occupants of a wooden passenger speedboat docked along the shoreline.

During the patrol, police conducted searches of the individuals’ belongings:

The First Suspect: A 33-year-old fisherman from North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was found with a quantity of leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis hidden inside a blue Lays chips container. The substance weighed 46 grams.

The Second Suspect: A 35-year-old miner from Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara, was also found in possession of suspected cannabis, which weighed 24 grams.

Both men were arrested and escorted to the Bartica Police Station, where the narcotics were weighed in their presence before being officially lodged. The suspects remain in police custody as investigators prepare to file charges.
