Azruddin Mohamed Willing to Work with Parties for Public Benefit

Embattled businessman Azruddin Mohamed has recently entered the political fray, making significant declarations regarding his intentions for the upcoming September 1 general and regional elections. Mr. Mohamed, who is currently facing legal issues related to the importation of a luxury vehicle, has ruled out forming a coalition with two of Guyana’s three prominent political parties, the People’s National Congress (PNC) and the Alliance For Change (AFC).

He expressed confidence that his team possesses the strength to win the election independently, citing a sample of 80,000 persons across Guyana, which he claims indicated his team would secure 65 percent of the votes. Although the name of his political party has not yet been revealed, he noted that it would be disclosed soon and that candidates would be drawn from across the political spectrum, including the PNC, PPP, and AFC.

Despite ruling out formal coalitions, Mr. Mohamed has expressed a willingness to work and vote with both the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and the PNC in the National Assembly. He emphasized that this willingness is “only for the upliftment and benefit of the Guyanese people.” When asked if he were to hold the balance of power in the 65-seat National Assembly, Mr. Mohamed stated that the decision on how to vote would be made “when it comes to making right decisions for the benefit of the country.”

Mr. Mohamed’s political ambitions and claims have drawn sharp criticism from PPP General Secretary Bharrat Jagdeo, who accused Mr. Mohamed’s team of faking a “groundswell” of support using bogus social media profiles. He dismissed the claim of an 80,000-person sample size as “lunacy” and indicative of “delusion,” noting that even the largest survey firms in the United States use smaller sample sizes for much larger populations. Mr. Jagdeo suggested there was no evidence of a mass exodus to Mr. Mohamed, asserting instead that people are gravitating towards the PPP.

In response to Mr. Mohamed’s claims of persecution for entering politics, Mr. Jagdeo contended that the actions of the Guyana government are based on evidence, referencing alleged evasion of US$50 million on gold exports cited by the United States, as well as recent tax allegations concerning the Lamborghini. Mr. Jagdeo suggested that Mr. Mohamed is attempting “to play the victim” to gain public sympathy and potentially deter actions by the United States by becoming a politician, stating, “It’s to save his own ass!”

Beyond the political rhetoric, sources indicate that Mr. Mohamed is attracting reasonable turnouts at meetings in various areas, including Amerindian communities like Mahdia and Micobie. There have also been clashes between Mr. Mohamed and PPP supporters in the latter’s strongholds, specifically Essequibo and Berbice, where many individuals have turned out to meet him.

Mr. Mohamed was recently arraigned before a city magistrate on charges of false declaration and tax evasion connected with the importation of a Lamborghini car, to which he pleaded not guilty and was released on GY$500,000 bail. He is described as an embattled city businessman.

These developments highlight the complex and evolving political landscape in Guyana as the next elections approach.
