Upper Mazaruni District Council Mourns the Passing of Former Toshao Lawrence Anselmo

The Upper Mazaruni District Council is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Mr. Lawrence Anselmo A.A., former Toshao of Paruima and a recipient of the Golden Arrow of Achievement. His lifelong dedication to Indigenous rights and the preservation of the Arecuna language has left an indelible mark on our community.

In many Indigenous traditions, the land is more than just a place to live; it embodies memory, spirit, and identity. We are committed to bringing Mr. Anselmo home to Paruima, to the land he fiercely defended and that shaped him.

Mr. Anselmo joins our heroes, Mr. Czar Henry and Mr. Anderson Hastings, fellow plaintiffs in the Upper Mazaruni land rights case. Their legacy continues to inspire and strengthen our resolve.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his grieving family, especially his siblings, and all who knew and loved him.

Details of the funeral arrangements will be shared soon. In the meantime, we ask for your prayers as we honor his memory and legacy.
