President Ali Defends Support from Opposition Members Ahead of Elections

President Irfaan Ali has defended the recent endorsements from several Opposition members who have pledged their support for his governing People’s Progressive Party (PPP) in the lead-up to the upcoming elections.

Since the announcement of the election date, a number of former Opposition figures have publicly aligned themselves with President Ali and the PPP. At an event yesterday, the President addressed questions regarding the party’s acceptance of individuals they have previously criticized.

Ali noted that those joining the PPP have recognized their past mistakes and are now committed to a new direction. “Those who are embracing this democratic force have acknowledged that they were part of something that was not in the best interest of Guyana. Many of them have spoken to us about this,” he explained.

When queried about concerns from existing party members who feel sidelined by the influx of new supporters, the President stated that such sentiments are not widespread within the PPP. He emphasized that the party’s philosophy aims to foster a national front that includes individuals from all backgrounds.

“I don’t believe this view is widespread. The PPP’s philosophy has always been about building a national front and uniting people of every class, race, and religion. This is what we are demonstrating,” Ali affirmed.

The President expressed confidence that more individuals will gravitate toward the PPP, citing the achievements of his government over the past five years. He believes that these accomplishments will bolster the party’s position in the upcoming elections, stating, “Based on our results, I am confident that we will be back in government after the September elections.”
