Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo confirmed on Thursday that no new taxes have been introduced since the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) took office in 2020. Jagdeo, who is also the PPP’s General Secretary, made this statement during a party press conference.

He highlighted the measures implemented by the government to alleviate the rising cost of living, including the removal of hundreds of taxes imposed by the previous APNU+AFC government from 2015 to 2020. “We promised to reverse what they put in place, we did it, and it cost $50 billion,” Jagdeo stated, adding that they have fulfilled their commitment to have “no new taxes.”
Key measures mentioned include the removal of Value Added Tax (VAT) on water and electricity and the reduction of freight charges to pre-pandemic levels. These adjustments have led to changes in customs duties, excise taxes, and input VAT on imported goods, ultimately resulting in lower prices for consumers.
Jagdeo emphasized that the PPP government not only fulfilled its promise to reduce burdensome taxes but also did not increase the financial burden on citizens. “It’s a story of fulfillment and a vision,” he concluded.
