News

Police are investigating the alleged murder of 20-year-old Kevin Smith, a Guyanese Amerindian miner from Baramita, following an incident on September 18, 2025, around 5:00 PM. The suspect, identified as 19-year-old Nadria James, is also a Guyanese Amerindian from the same area.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Smith and James had been in a relationship and living together in a wooden and plastic camp for approximately a year. On the day of the incident, James returned home after consuming alcohol and found Smith lying in a hammock. Upon noticing her, Smith allegedly grabbed a cutlass and struck James on her left shoulder and right hand, prompting an agitated response from her.

In retaliation, James reportedly pulled out a handmade knife and stabbed Smith in the left side of his chest. Following the altercation, Smith managed to stumble out of the camp but collapsed in a nearby patch of bushes.

James fled the scene and went to the Baramita Police Station, where she provided a statement about the incident. Police officers then returned with her to the scene, where they discovered Smith lying motionless with visible blood and a stab wound on his chest.

Smith was transported to the Baramita Cottage Hospital, where Medex Holy Hedglow pronounced him dead. His body is currently at the hospital, awaiting a post-mortem examination.

James has been arrested and is in custody as the investigation continues.
