Gary Melville, a 46-year-old labourer from Lima Sands, Essequibo Coast, was allegedly murdered by a 23-year-old farmer from the same community. The incident reportedly occurred between 8:00 PM on Friday and 5:30 AM on Saturday.

Enquiries revealed that Melville and the suspect were friends and both lived in the area. A female shopkeeper reported that around 8:00 PM on Friday, the suspect, Melville, and others visited the shop, where they consumed alcohol. She noted that the suspect was drinking high wine, while Melville consumed 592 beers, and they were seated at the same table.
The shopkeeper overheard the suspect complaining that Melville had burned him with a cigarette, leading to a scuffle between the two. She observed the suspect bleeding from the head while Melville was on the ground. Another female in the shop intervened to stop the fight. Melville then left the shop on foot, heading north.
Approximately ten minutes later, the suspect left on his motorcycle, following the same direction as Melville.
At around 5:30 AM, a 48-year-old woman walking on the Lima Sands public road discovered Melville lying motionless on the eastern side. She raised the alarm, prompting a police response.
Investigators examined the scene and noted injuries on Melville’s body, including to his hands, knee, feet, and face. His body was taken to Suddie Hospital, where a doctor pronounced him dead on arrival. It was subsequently moved to the hospital’s mortuary, pending a post-mortem examination.
The suspect was located and found to have injuries to the left side of his hand, head, and knee. He was arrested and taken into police custody before being escorted to the Oscar Joseph District Hospital for treatment. After receiving care, he returned to custody.
