The APNU Coalition has expressed alarm over the recent announcement that Mr. Bissoondyal Singh, President of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), and his entire membership have endorsed President Irfaan Ali for a second term. In a statement released via Facebook, the coalition denounced what they described as an “outrageous decision.”

The APNU noted that this endorsement follows an incident in March 2025 when the GCB Executive donned red shirts during a visit to President Ali after Singh’s re-election. They argued that this development raises serious concerns about the integrity and impartiality of the GCB regarding player selection, financial management, and adherence to international cricket norms.
The coalition further cited Article 2.4 D of the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Constitution, which strictly prohibits governmental interference in the management of cricket in member countries. They expressed concern that the endorsement could put the GCB at odds with Cricket West Indies (CWI), potentially inviting unwanted government influence into the administration of cricket in Guyana.
“The endorsement is a direct invitation for the government to interfere in this wonderful game,” the APNU stated, warning that an alliance between the Board and President Ali could threaten the independence of cricket administration in the country.
The APNU recalled the historical significance of avoiding political interference in cricket, referencing the British Guiana Cricket Board of Control and GCB’s successful management over the past eighty years. They lamented that the GCB’s decision represents a break from tradition and a troubling day for the sport’s administration in Guyana.
In response, Mohabir Anil Nandlall SC MP took to Facebook to defend the GCB’s decision, criticizing the APNU for its stance. He accused the coalition of being “allergic to democracy” and labeled them as “thoroughbred authoritarians.” Nandlall emphasized that the Constitution of Guyana guarantees individuals the freedom to support any political party of their choice.
“The members of the Guyana Cricket Board have chosen to exercise this fundamental right and freedom. For this, they are condemned,” he stated, arguing that the APNU represents a bygone era with no place in a modern Guyana.
The debate surrounding the GCB’s endorsement continues to escalate, highlighting the intersection of politics and sports in the country.
