A fire on Sunday evening has left seven people homeless after three houses were destroyed in a blaze that authorities suspect was an act of arson.

The Guyana Fire Service was summoned to North Sophia shortly after 7:00 p.m. upon reports of a structure fire. When firefighters arrived, they discovered one house already fully engulfed in flames, which were rapidly spreading to two other nearby residences located within the same yard.
Preliminary investigations by the Guyana Fire Service identified the origin of the fire as a motorcycle. Reports suggest that a male resident of one of the affected homes—who was allegedly suffering from a mental breakdown—set the motorcycle on fire while it was positioned under his house. The flames from the motorcycle quickly consumed the first structure before spreading to the two adjacent buildings.
By the time the situation was brought under control, one motorcycle was completely destroyed and all three houses were gutted, leaving seven individuals without a home. The Fire Service has officially classified the incident as a case of malicious ignition.
