Karran Sukhan, a 25-year-old businessman from Lot 143 Number 2 Village, East Canje, Berbice, has been granted bail following charges of domestic abuse against his reputed wife, Joanna Ramoutar.

Sukhan made his first court appearance on June 13 before Magistrate Michelle Matthias, where he faced three charges: assault, causing actual bodily harm, and use of threatening language. He pleaded not guilty to all charges and was remanded to custody.
During a subsequent court appearance on June 23, Sukhan’s attorney successfully argued for his release on bail. The court set bail at $50,000 for the assault charge and $30,000 each for the other two charges.
Sukhan, who operates a taxi service, was arrested in Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice) after Ramoutar publicly shared on social media that she had endured six years of abuse and was living in fear.
Following his release on bail, Ramoutar took to social media again, expressing her fear regarding Sukhan’s return to their community. The case highlights ongoing concerns about domestic violence and the safety of victims in such situations.
