Blumberg Grain Signs MoU with Guyana to Enhance Food Security

Blumberg Grain, a leading global food security company, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Guyana, represented by the Ministry of Agriculture, to collaborate on the marketing and branding of a regional food hub currently under construction at Yarrowkabra along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway.

Blumberg Grain specializes in integrated crop and food security systems designed to reduce post-harvest losses of grains, produce, and other perishables to less than 5%.

Philip Blumberg, Chairman of Blumberg Partners, expressed optimism about the MoU, emphasizing its potential to significantly reduce post-harvest losses in Guyana. “While it is a self-sufficient country, reducing post-harvest loss will increase exportable products in the agriculture sector, particularly to CARICOM and northern South America,” Blumberg stated.

He noted that by minimizing these losses, farmers could see greater revenues through increased exports, allowing Guyana to tap into regional and global markets.

Blumberg highlighted the government’s vision for a food hub, stating, “We are prepared to join the minister and the president in that effort to create a major regional hub.” He announced plans for Blumberg Grain to invest in processing Guyana’s agricultural products, including rice, meat, and poultry. Additionally, the company aims to establish a manufacturing plant in Guyana to produce advanced shade houses and designate the country as its regional hub.

Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha emphasized that the MoU reflects the government’s commitment to advancing Guyana’s agricultural sector. “This agreement with an internationally recognized company brings expertise to Guyana to transform our agricultural development,” he remarked.

U.S. Ambassador to Guyana Nicole Theriot also lauded the signing of the MoU as a crucial step in the partnership between Blumberg Grain and the Guyanese government. “Food security is a priority for both President Ali and CARICOM, and this deal is a major step towards achieving that,” she said.

Ambassador Theriot expressed pride in the collaboration, highlighting its potential to change lives across the region.

The Ministry of Agriculture continues to intensify efforts aligned with the government’s commitment to developing the agriculture sector, aiming for a more secure food future for Guyana.
