Canadian High Commissioner to Guyana, Sébastien Sigouin, emphasized his commitment to engaging all stakeholders as part of Canada’s longstanding support for democratic governance, human rights, and the rule of law.

Earlier this week, High Commissioner Sigouin met with the leadership and senior members of the WIN party, during which they discussed issues of mutual interest, including democratic governance, constitutional processes, and the functioning of Parliament.
In an earlier statement, the High Commissioner called for the election of the Leader of the Opposition. Following his recent meeting with the WIN leader, speculation emerged on social media regarding potential support for Mr. Mohamed, a WIN political figure.
While not directly addressing the speculation, Sigouin took to social media to clarify that engagement does not equate to endorsement. “Engagement does not imply endorsement; it reflects a genuine commitment to dialogue and to institutions. Canada’s approach has always been guided by respect: respect for sovereignty, for constitutional processes, and for the principle that strong institutions are essential to a resilient democracy,” he stated.
He reiterated his role as the High Commissioner to engage with a broad spectrum of society, including government officials, opposition leaders, civil society representatives, and community members. Sigouin noted this approach is rooted in his support for democratic governance and the rule of law.
The High Commissioner also highlighted the renewed public conversation in Guyana concerning the role of Parliament. He expressed his belief that Parliament is a cornerstone of democracy, where accountability is held, differing views are peacefully expressed, and the interests of citizens are debated through constitutional methods.
Sigouin affirmed that these principles will continue to guide his work and the efforts of Canada in Guyana.
