The incident in question occurred on July 16, 2021, when Sukharam attempted to kill his 58-year-old stepfather. While he originally pleaded not guilty to the attempted murder charge, he admitted guilt to wounding Suknaram with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Under Guyanese law, Sukharam was entitled to a trial by jury, where he would have been presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. However, he chose to waive this right by entering a guilty plea.

Prosecutor Marisa Edwards presented evidence indicating that on the day of the incident, around 8:00 AM, Yughanray was at home when Mulshankar verbally assaulted him and threw glass bottles, resulting in injuries. After fleeing the scene, Mulshankar was later observed with broken glass bottles in his hands and proceeded to stab Yughanray multiple times in a neighbor’s yard.

Yughanray sustained two stab wounds to his abdomen and was quickly transported to Skeldon Public Hospital before being transferred to New Amsterdam Public Hospital for further treatment. After his discharge, he reported the incident to the Springlands Police Station.

Mulshankar was arrested on April 8, 2022, after being informed of the allegations. During police questioning, he admitted that Yughanray had tormented him and thrown bottles at him.

Justice Kumar-Chetty acknowledged that there was a factual basis for Mulshankar’s guilty plea and formally accepted it for the charge of felonious wounding.

The court has ordered the submission of a probation report, a prison conduct report, aggravating and mitigating factors, a victim impact statement, and inputs from both Mulshankar’s attorney, Sasha Roberts, and Prosecutor Edwards by March 2. Sentencing is scheduled for March 12, with Mulshankar remaining in custody until then.
