Police are actively investigating reports of suspected Trafficking in Persons (TIP) following a joint operation conducted on the night of February 7 into the early hours of February 8, 2026, at a building located on Charlotte and Albert Streets in Georgetown.

The operation was executed by members of the Trafficking in Persons Unit at the Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters, in collaboration with personnel from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security.
During the exercise, a total of seventy-seven (77) Cuban nationals, including both men and women, were contacted and screened for indicators of trafficking. Several individuals indicated that they had traveled to Guyana under credit arrangements and mentioned that their travel documents were being retained until they repaid their debts. These claims are critical components of the ongoing investigation.
The individuals were subsequently handed over to the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security for further assessment and support.
While the premises were thoroughly searched, no illegal items were discovered, and no arrests were made during the operation.
Investigations are ongoing as authorities continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the case and ensure the safety and welfare of the individuals involved.
