DPP Discontinues Charges Against Azruddin Mohamed Amid Extradition Proceedings

News

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has formally discontinued charges filed by the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) against Azruddin Mohamed, Leader of the We Invest In Nationhood Party. This decision is due to legal considerations stemming from an ongoing extradition request by the United States.

The charges, linked to Mohamed’s importation of a Lamborghini luxury car, included:

  • Making and subscribing to a false declaration to the GRA, contrary to Section 217(1)(a) of the Customs Act, Chapter 82:01.
  • Knowingly being involved in fraudulent evasion, contrary to Section 218(e) of the Customs Act, Chapter 82:01.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, the DPP’s Chambers clarified that these charges were initially filed by the GRA before the formal extradition request was received from the U.S. Government.

The decision to discontinue these charges followed a careful evaluation of the ongoing extradition proceedings and various legal principles, including international comity and fairness to the defendant.

Currently, the extradition case involving Azruddin and his father, Nazar Mohamed, is still in progress at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. Both men were granted bail of $150,000 each at their appearance before Magistrate Judy Latchman.
