A 24-year-old labourer has been remanded to prison after being charged with two counts of drug trafficking following a police operation at Charity Backstreet, Essequibo Coast.

Collis Goodluck of Dartmouth, Essequibo Coast, appeared before Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, where he faced two separate charges of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking under Section 5(1)(a)(i) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Control Act, Chapter 10:10.
The first charge relates to 230 grams of suspected cannabis, while the second involves 6 grams of an amphetamine-type substance commonly known as “Molly” chemically identified as methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA). Goodluck pleaded not guilty to both charges. The prosecution opposed bail and the court ordered that he be remanded to prison on both counts. The matters were adjourned to April 27.
According to reports, the charges stem from an incident on Saturday afternoon when police ranks conducting a mobile patrol observed a man standing between two stalls at Charity Backstreet. Upon noticing the officers, the suspect allegedly discarded a black plastic bag and a smaller whitish bag onto the roof of a nearby shed.
Officers retrieved the items and examined them in the suspect’s presence, finding plant material suspected to be cannabis including leaves, seeds, and stems as well as two transparent zip-lock bags containing a crystal-like substance believed to be MDMA. Goodluck was arrested at the scene and taken to the Charity Police Station, where the substances were weighed in his presence.
